We don’t allow ourselves to even have authentic experiences anymore because authentic experiences just happen on their own. We can’t control them. We can’t set expectations.
We have to just let them happen. Or not. And that freaks us out.
We want certainty. We want to know that we’re going to have a good time.
So we become willing to trade off the possibility of a truly authentic and transformative experience for the safety of certainty.
And certainty means catering to the lowest common denominator.
Catering to the lowest common denominator means sacrificing what makes something authentic - emergence - and making it mundane and mediocre.
And that level of “good enough” is actually good enough for many people. But that experience wouldn’t be fulfilling or satisfying. It wouldn’t enable opportunities for growth.
And this is where I see a problem emerging.
Some people - hi, raising my hand over here - need fulfillment on a deeper level. That level of “good enough” isn’t good enough because there is no novelty to it. There is no possibility of a greater reward because all risk has been squeezed out of the experience, leading to formulaic by-the-numbers interactions.
